The purpose of Tang Soo Do training, our art, consists of self defense, health, and learning how
to reach our highest potential.
We believe by following and teaching the above values and principles that it will improve the character of our students and in essence, help our students develop postive life skills.
The physical training and practice of our art not only teaches students to protect themselves, but it can contribute to their overall health and wellbeing as well. Which in turn, also plays a part in self improvement.
We feel that when our students strive to become better that not only will they reap the benefits, but society as a whole will benefit. Therefore, we believe we are contributing to making the world a better place for everyone.
Our Dojang's History
Master Edwin Petty opened our dojang June 11, 2011. Shortly after opening, his son and daughter, Master Sean and Brittany, joined him as instructors. Master Kelly Shaver became head instructor in 2018. Today, the dojang is owned by Kelly and Brittany, and Master Sean contributes by teaching and helping with operations.
Lineage of our Art – Tang Soo Do
Supreme Grand Master Hwang Kee
Grand Master Hwang Kee is the founder of Moo Duk Kwan (from which the majority of all modern Tang Soo Do stylists trace their lineage).
He included his philosophy that no one could ever reach perfection through out his art . His decision to use the Midnight Blue Belt over the color black was based on this philosophy. He felt the color black meant perfection though humans are never perfect, but the midnight blue sky was limitless, just like the training and knowledge that one could practice in a lifetime. Today, Midnight Blue is still used for the color of our Black Belt.
Grand Master Hwang Kee made it his life's mission to help spread the martial arts around the world and trained many masters. He authored many books, traveled to many countries, and did everything he could to unify the martial arts in Korea and the world.
